MORE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING AND RECOVERING FROM THE IMPACTS of EARLY TRAUMA
There is increasing recognition in the mental health field that growing up with persistent emotional and psychological stressors may have long-standing impact on one's nervous system. New diagnoses like CPTSD, (aka Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) or DTD (aka Developmental Trauma Disorder), are being proposed to address the unique presentation of symptoms that reflect these effects.
Children who go through extreme hardships often sustain physically invisible wounds that, if unaddressed, can cause ongoing distress, difficulty and dysfunction. So-called ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES or ACEs (i.e. the loss of a parent, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, emotional neglect, serious medical illness, familial instability or upheaval, extreme political conflict, immigration or displacement, life-threatening illness, growing up with a caretaker who is ill, addicted, mentally ill or otherwise unable to parent adequately, divorce, etc.) can have lasting effects on how we feel, behave and think. It is also quite common for survivors to struggle with sustaining close, interpersonal relationships as a result of such early trauma.
